Views from Frog Hill
Brazil
Morro do Sapo, or “Frog Hill”, is a favela community located within the municipality of Duque de Caxias, just north of Rio de Janeiro. The residents of Frog Hill face numerous systemic issues caused by over a century of government neglect. The community lacks basic services such as public transportation, childcare facilities, education and healthcare. Residents have little access to employment and often face discrimination when seeking work in nearby cities. While the media portrays favelas as violent, crime-ridden, filthy, and uncultured, the reality is quite different. For the residents of Frog Hill, the favela has been home for generations. They are still there after the gunshots, long after the media has retreated, when the sun begins to rise and the smell of garlic drifts through the morning air. These photographs were part a community exhibition outside a church atop Frog Hill in October of 2015.
