Little Mango Tree
Brazil
Little Mango Tree, or “Mangueirinha,” is a neighborhood of favela communities located just north of Rio de Janeiro in the municipality of Duque de Caxias. Residents of Mangueirinha, like many who call favelas home, have experienced decades of government neglect. As a result, the community lacks basic services such as day care, healthcare, and public recreation space. Favelas are also stigmatized in Brazil, causing many residents to face discrimination when looking for housing and work. Recognizing the need for childcare in Mangueirinha, the Brazilian NGO Terra dos Homens launched the Espaço da Imaginação, or Imagination Space, aimed at providing a safe space for children to play. The Espaço offers kids ages 2-10 arts and cultural activities while their caretakers work. In the Spring of 2015, the children participated in a series of photography workshops led by Sarah Garrahan as part of the Felsman Documentary Fellowship.
